Zwirn in Review – A string could never be so fun!
If you never thought a piece of string could be so fascinating and entertaining think again. Zwirn is probably one of the simplest applications you can find on the App Store. It is entertaining enough by providing you with a string (a Zwirn, which is German for twine) and a destination; it can’t get simpler than that!
Zwirn is an original game developed by Bruno Meilick. The word Zwirn itself is apparently German for twine and that is all this game is about. You play with a piece of twine and have to get it from one point to another through each level, sometimes having to complete other smaller tasks as well. Trying to recreate this experience in real life using a piece of twine would be a very dull experience but because this is a game found on the App Store it is unique and innovative.
The fact that Zwirn is created for the iPod Touch and iPhone makes the experience as hands on as the real thing. Using touch controls to easily zoom in and out of levels, and alsocontrol where and how your Zwirn will behave, the experience is very fluid. Once you begin playing Zwirn you won’t want to stop because as you finish each level the string keeps flowing into the next level. Once you are about halfway through the game the stages grow in difficulty, including the ability to add tacks to create turning points for your Zwirn. All the controls work very well when it comes to using your finger to drag the Zwirn around, place tacks, and easily change levels on the fly.
Zwirn has a very subtle color palette with a colorful twine for you to play with and about 50 levels all with varying backgrounds to set the mood. The colors are easy on your eyes therefore letting you play as much as you want to without having to take a break. The last update added background music while playing which definitely improves the experience as well. There is no menu or other visuals that clutter the game screen, as soon as you start the application it’s ready to go where you left off. As mentioned before you use pinch controls to choose your level, finger taps to place and remove tacks, and drag your finger to control.
Although Zwirn is a very innovative twist and makes it surprisingly entertaining to play with a piece of twine, it still needs a lot of work. The last update reportedly fixed some problems with the twine passing through tacks and not moving correctly, but it they are still present. After applying the recent update the Zwirn still has problems passing through tacks which ruins any urge to play. Unfortunately Ionly went about halfway through the game before I literally reached a fork in the road which I couldn’t pass either way. Both levels that I had the option to complete involved intricate tack placement, but unfortunately the tack glitch inhibits any hopes of completely either one. Hopefully a real update for Zwirn will come soon and all hopes of advancing will be fulfilled. As of right now however this game can’t be given a satisfied rating due to the broken twine mechanics so keep that in mind. None the less you should check out ZwirnLite which is free and gives you a taste of the game.

Excellent pick up & play
Poor twine mechanics
Beautiful Puzzle Experience
This is such an underrated gem. There are no guns or explosions in Zwirn, just a wonderful puzzle experience with beautiful graphics and music. It's both challenging and meditative. If you liked Zen Bound, you will love Zwirn. In fact I find I prefer it to that game.
I like it, good graphics, touchy controls but you get used to it. Could be much more challenging.. And the "last level" showing the camera?? What do I do? Please put out some more levels.
